Introduction to Yanbu, Saudi Arabia

Yanbu is a city in the middle of western Saudi Arabia whose name translates to 'spring by the sea' in English, and which can be spelled Yenbo or Yambo. This city has been settled for no fewer than 2,500 years and is Saudi Arabia’s second most important port after Jeddah, which is 350kms to the south. Today, the port here is mainly used for petroleum shipping, and the city has a large expatriate population, many of whom stay at Yanbu hotels while in the city. The city is situated on the coast of the Red Sea and is actually divided into three smaller communities, which are roughly 15 minutes away from each other by car. These communities are: the downtown area, the industrial city, and the city’s older part, known as 'the Palms'. Access to the city is via its international airport or by highway. The local cuisine is filled with the aromatic spices the area is known for and must be sampled. Diving around the coral reefs that line both sides of the natural harbour is popular.
