Introduction to Taif, Saudi Arabia
The Saudi city of Taif hugs the sides of the Sarawat Mountains at an altitude of nearly 2,000m. This Mecca Province city is the summer escape of the Saudi government, which seeks cool breezes in this land of honey, grapes and roses when the heat of the national capital, Riyadh, becomes too much. The natural surroundings can be appreciated at Al Rudaf Park, dotted with huge granite boulders and featuring a zoo, or Al Hada Mountain's nature reserve. A must-visit for those of the Muslim faith is the sanctuary where Muhammad himself once visited, now known as Muhammad's Sanctuary. The former royal palace of Shubra today houses the regional museum and is the best place to gain insight into the lengthy history of this heritage-filled city. Out of the city is the now ruined Okaz Souk with its rock carvings along with a Turkish fort, reachable by camelback.
