Introduction to Medina, Saudi Arabia
The city of Medina is the burial location of the Prophet Muhammad and is considered to be the Islamic religion's second-holiest site. The city is located inland from the Red Sea, in west Saudi Arabia, about 320kms north of Jeddah. Although many of the city's historic sites have been razed by the current Saudi administration, three fabulous mosques remain. The trio are: Al-Qiblatain, Al-Nabawi and Islam's oldest, the Quba Mosque. The tomb of Muhammad is beneath Masjid al-Nabawi's landmark green dome. The central areas of the city feature several Medina hotels which are within easy range of the main sites. A number of options are operated by international hotelier groups and these establishments have a good choice of in-house restaurants. The Old Bazaar is a busy place where textiles, carpets and souvenirs can be purchased. Mt Uhud is an interesting daytrip and historic battle site. In the 7th century, local troops fought forces from Mecca here. Like Mecca, central Medina is out-of-bounds to non Muslims, a regulation that is strictly enforced. Visit our Medina Travel Guide
