Introduction to Makkah - Ajyad
Ajyad is a popular hotel district in the city of Makkah, in Saudi Arabia. Makkah is considered to be the holiest city in the Islamic world. A pilgrimage here is one of the most important trips that followers of Islam can make, meaning that around 13 million people visit each year. The district was once home to the historic Ajyad Fortress; it was the area's best known landmark before it was demolished in 2002. Despite public outcry, the fortress was replaced by 11 high-rise buildings, hosting apartments, a shopping centre and Ajyad hotels. One of these towers is even said to be the tallest hotel in the world. The site's historical importance has not been completely forgotten though. Building planners have been thoughtful enough to incorporate a Lunar Observation Centre and an Islamic Museum in one of the structures. Other unique features include a four-faced clock, which is larger than London's Big Ben. Visitors can take a lift to the observation deck beneath the clock, which houses the aforementioned Lunar Observation Centre. Travellers can get here by flying to Jeddah, 40 miles away, which has excellent road connections to this holy city.other spellings: ajyadhotels, ayjad hote, ajyaad hotell, ejyad otel, ajyadd hotle, ajyyad hotes, ajyed
