The result is four distinct seasons, the coldest being winter between November and February when the river Neva regularly freezes and temperatures have been known to sink to dangerous lows close to -40°C. If you’re not a fan of the cold, then St Petersburg may prove a chilling concept at this time of year.
Spring and autumn are the most variable times of year. Snows can sometimes last well into spring, meaning its not unheard of for frost and snowfall during Easter; similarly the end of September can be very cold.
The skies are more often than not very clear and the twilight extends from around midnight to before 06:00, making the perfect excuse for night-long summer parties. July and August typically see high levels of rainfall compared to the rest of the year however, meaning the best months to visit in terms of temperature, rainfall and sunlight are undoubtedly May or June.
