Metro: unlike some of the grubby underground networks found in many cities in the Western world, the St Petersburg system is a typically Communist work of art with colonnaded stations, marble floors and giant chandeliers. It’s cheap too but gets insanely busy during the weekday rush hour.
Bus: another cheap way to get around St Petersburg, the bus network is extensive and stretches out to the very limits of the city. If you can read the required stop, this is a convenient way to travel.
Taxi: taxi, usually yellow or orange, are widely available as the most expensive form of transport in the city. Other private companies also run taxi services which are usually arranged by telephone if you can speak Russian well enough, or you can occasionally be picked up in the street.
Route taxi: the marshrutka is a mainstay of the Russian inner city transport system, so too in St Petersburg. The main problem is knowing exactly where each one is going: the front will show the ultimate destination in Russian but it’s a long winding road before it gets there.
