January Festivals

Russian Winter Festival: in January, Izmailovo Park is the setting in Moscow for what is actually a nationwide celebrated event. Some of the country’s top performers in the fields of music and dance showcase their talents for enthusiastic crowds; while locals get kitted out in costume to enjoy a variety of customs and festive practice aimed at celebrating the arrival of the New Year.
February Festivals

Defenders of the Motherland Day: akin to Veteran’s Day in the US, this annual commemorative event is conducted in February at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Alexander Park. The proceedings are aimed at paying tribute to all those soldiers alive and dead who have served the country in the Red Army. The park’s key monument is adorned with flowers, and wreaths are laid at graves of the deceased.
May Festivals

Victory Day: in May, the residents of Moscow pay tribute to Russian soldiers who died at the hands of German forces in 1941, while also celebrating the victories scored against the same at Berlin and Stalingrad. Victory Park is the main setting for the proceedings which see military parades, veterans donning army uniform, displays of dancing and singing, and fireworks in the evening.
June Festivals

Moscow International Film Festival: now well over 40 years old, this annual celebration of film held in June sees screenings of both Russian and foreign movie productions from independent directors. With everything from documentaries and film shorts to feature length productions, the festival has something for all viewers.
August Festivals

International Folklore Festival: the Hermitage Gardens are the setting for August’s Folklore Festival, in which reputable Russian musicians and dancers get together to showcase their talents.
October Festivals

Kremlin Cup: in October, tennis fans congregate in Moscow to enjoy the country’s biggest tennis tournament, in which players of international standard compete for the respected title and a large cash prize.
