Its name changed twice in the 20th century, first to Petrograd in 1914 for just 10 years before the name Peter - relating to Peter the Great, the founder of the city - was dropped altogether. In his place stood Vladimir Lenin, the Russian leader following the revolutions of 1918, as the city retained the name Leningrad right up until the end of the roller coaster Communist years in 1991. After more than 300 years of sieges, revolutions and bitterly cold winters, St Petersburg has emerged more stunning than ever.
