Introduction to Sochi, Russia
Sochi, one of Russia's most southern destinations, is a Black Sea coastal resort. Nationally famous as the summer capital, it remains little-known outside of Russia; however, the winning of the 2014 Winter Olympic bid and the bids for several other sporting events look set to change this. Although the beaches along the city's lengthy coastline are made of shingle, this doesn't deter the four million Russians that set foot here each year to partake in everything from kite surfing to yachting. In addition to Sochi hotels, beach activities and a humid subtropical climate, the resort offers vibrant nightlife, and world-class skiing and snowboarding in the Caucasus Mountains that back the shore. At first, the resort may seem quirky to non-Russians with its elaborate Stalinist monuments; but most visitors quickly realise the city's architecture, from the Michael Archangel Cathedral to the Winter Theatre, is in fact one of its greatest charms. For a break from the beach, just north of the city is the Caucasian Biosphere Reserve. Entry to the city can be made via Sochi International Airport. other spellings: sochihotels, soshi otel, soshi hotell, so chi hote, soche hotes
