Introduction to Moscow - Basmanny
Situated just outside of the centre of Moscow to the northeast of the central ring round, Basmanny is a large suburb featuring a host of historic buildings and sites. Some of the churches in the area are breathtaking, notably St Nikita with its gleaming golden dome and crosses atop its white and pink stone walls. Clean Ponds is a favourite recreation area in Basmanny; it is used a skating rink in winter and in summer comes alive with swans and ducks, making it an ideal spot for a picnic. The area is also home to Red Gates and the German Quarter; the main features have unfortunately disappeared, yet they remain steeped in tradition with a few relics left over for history buffs interested in Moscow's turbulent past.
