Introduction to Moscow - Alexeyevsky
Europe's largest city is Russia's glowing capital of Moscow, best known for its candy-swirled cathedral spires and unparalleled Soviet history. Northeast from the heart of the city, the district of Alexeyevsky sits along the northwest corner of Sokolniki Park and east of the famous Ostankino Palace. The former summer residence of the Sheremetev was completely outside of the city when it was built in the 1790s. Now the estate - the third largest wooden building in the world - is open to the public, allowing visitors to tour its private opera hall, 17th century Trinity church and adjacent pavilions built in Egyptian and Italian styles. Grandiose and sugary pink, this neoclassical palace also has its own park that is now shared with the All-Russia Exhibition Centre. The city's main attractions are found on the northern bank of the river, easily reached from Alexeyevsky hotels by the Kaluzhsko-Rizhskaya Line of the Moscow Metro, which crosses northeast to southwest across the metropolitan area.Visit our Moscow Travel Guide
