Introduction to Baia Mare, Romania
Baia Mare is located near the Romanian border with Ukraine. It is about 600kms from the Romanian capital Bucharest, and so is closer to Ukraine and Hungary than it is to the administrative heart of its own country. This means that the town has a mixed flavour that is equal parts Hungarian, Ukranian and Romanian and languages including Russian, Hungarian and Romanian are all spoken fluently here. The town is made up of people from all three countries. Baia Mare hotels are staffed and in many cases owned by people who live in Ukraine and travel here for work.
