For most Puerto Ricans, the major gateway to the mainland United States is San Juan Airport.
This hub, formally named Luis Munoz Marin International Airport after the island's first democratically elected governor, is also the first glimpse most visitors get of Puerto Rico.
In 2010 alone, more than eight and a half passengers used this airport five kilometres southeast of San Juan, in the community of Carolina.
Although there are four concourses within the facilitie's current terminal building, a newly renovated terminal with just one concourse is expected to open in 2011.
At the moment, however, the airport still features several ATMs, a banking branch, souvenir kiosks, duty-free shops and San Juan Airport hotels, filled with even more amenities.
Fast food franchises line the hub's corridors, and visitors can even get haircuts at the on-site barber shop or beauty salon.
The Teodoro Moscoso Bridge connects the airport with the rest of the city.
