Sightseeing: with its varied monuments that date back to before the birth of Christ, Lisbon is a capital that ranks among the most scenic in Europe. Much of the sightseeing is centred on the historic core of the city, Belem with its famous tower and monastery, but in truth every one of the cities seven hills is stacked high with surprising relics from the past, meaning it would take numerous visits here to begin to scratch the surface.
Boating: seeing the long Lisbon riverfront from the estuary on a clear sunny day is a sight not to be missed. Conveniently, many tour boat services ply the Tagus River, going to and from nearby destinations like Barreiro and Montijo, among others. Times and services can change, so it is best to head to a nearby tourist information kiosk to find out the latest information on all boat services.
Shopping: Lisbon has some fantastic shopping, including the Colombo Shopping Mall, the largest in Iberia and a unique building of pastel colours, wrought iron work, sculptures and ornamental fountains. The Vasco de Gama Shopping Centre at Nations Park is also worth a look. Chiado is a well-known shopping district in the city and home to a statue of a much-loved Portuguese poet, Fernando Pessoa.
Gambling: those that like a wager will be glad to know that the Portuguese capital has two large casinos, the new Casino Lisboa in Parque das Nacoes and Estoril Casino, the largest in Europe, which is about 30kms outside the city centre. Casino Lisboa was opened to the public in April 2006, while Estoril is something of legend. Those that want to impersonate James Bond have certainly come to the right place; it is widely considered to have prompted the creation of the first Bond story, Casino Royale.
