June Festivals
Portugal’s National Day: falling on the anniversary of the death of the country’s greatest poet, Luis de Camoes, Portugal’s National Day is held on June 10. Every town and the city in the country holds its own range of cultural events on this special day, with a huge range of recitals and shows in the capital Lisbon.
Feast Day of the Popular Saint: June is special month in the festival calendar, with celebrations for St Anthony, St John and St Peter lasting two days each. The streets come alive at this time with lights, paper decorations, lanterns and effigies dedicated to the saints in question.
June/July Festivals
Super Bock Super Rock: this rock festival is held on various dates in June and July and usually features top names from the world of music, including in recent years Metallica, Arcade Fire, Underworld and Scissor Sisters.
August Festivals
Estoril Music Festival: this five-week long super festival kicks off the Lisbon summer with good and varied music, fireworks and a lot more besides. A great deal of the music is classical with orchestras from across the world joining the Lisbon ensemble playing both in and outside. By the time this party winds down it is usually close to the middle of August.
December Festivals
Lisbon Marathon: at the end of the European marathon circuit, the annual Lisbon race is certainly one to watch given the usually clear weather and stunning estuary backdrop. The marathon also attracts the top names from the running world.
Noite Magica (New Year’s Eve): Lisbon’s end of year celebrations ranks right up there with some of the other European capitals. The Belem Tower is the best place to be, featuring a huge open air disco with live DJs, fireworks and lots more that generally does not let up until a good few hours into the next year.
