Those seeking out some classic Portuguese dishes such as arroz de marisco, seafood with rice and Lisbon’s ever-popular pasteis de nata, a sweet pastry often topped with cinnamon, should head to areas including Bairro Alto, Alfama and the main entertainment centre, Belem.
The truly Portuguese places will offer set menus, often with wine and after dinner port or a starting cocktail and individual dishes a la carte. Bairro Alto is an area with an abundance of traditional restaurants, from the simple, home-cooked variety to the more expensive. South American cooking, particularly Brazilian, is also on offer here.
