February Festivals
Fantasporto - Oporto International Film Festival: of the country’s many movie festivals, this is one of the most popular and diverse. With more than 25 years of screenings to enrich its reputation, the event draws large numbers of visitors of local, national and international origin.
March/April Festivals
Easter: as a predominantly Roman Catholic country, Portugal places a great deal of emphasis on the Easter season which begins in March and culminates with Easter Sunday which invariably falls in April.
May Festivals
Rock in Rio-Lisboa: this large scale open-air rock festival attracts big names and has previously given stage space to the likes of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Carlos Santana, Sting, Jamiroquai, Guns n' Roses and Shakira. The event is so big and requires so much organisation that is generally runs every two years only. Check media sources for more information.
June Festivals
Algarve International Film Festival: the best of indie, obscure and mainstream movie, short films, documentaries and animations from Portugal and around the world are showcased in this six-day event that sees screenings at a number of different theatre locations.
Vilar de Mouros Festival: essentially a music festival, this annual event attracts an older crowd on the whole with attendees flocking to see some of the country’s best established musical acts as well as others from around the world.
August Festivals
Festas da Ria: held in July and August in the city of Aveiro, the Festas da Ria is an annual event that sees a variety of performances, radical sport demonstrations, art and handicrafts and gastronomically related exhibitions.
October Festivals
Angra do Heroismo International Jazz Festival: one of the country’s leading jazz festivals sees artists from around the world, assemble to showcase their talents in this popular musical genre.
November Festivals
Sao Martinho Day: citizens across the country pay tribute to the saint who is known for having once covered a needy man with his cape. Locals get together and eat chestnuts while enjoying the new batches of wine from the country’s vineyards.
