Car: the easiest way to explore the Algarve region is by car, allowing you the freedom to go where you want and discover some of those smaller towns and villages and out of the way deserted beaches. Car hire here is relatively cheap and there are hire firms in all the major resorts. You’ll find traffic usually pretty light, but some of the smaller roads might not be in the best condition.
Ferry: more commonly used for leisure than for a means of transport, boat cruises are en excellent way to explore the local coastline and even do a bit of fishing while you’re at it.
Bus: there are various forms of local buses in the Algarve and in the individual resorts, which can be a useful way to hop around within a town, but can be a little unreliable when travelling further. There is a local bus service that runs from the major towns and resorts like Albufeira, Portimao, and Vilamoura, with timetables varying according to the day and season.
Within resorts, there are some smaller shuttle type services that can be worth using. For example, in Albufeira there is a blue ‘Tourist Train’ that does a 40 minute loop around town from the Strip to the Old Town and back, buses run every 20 minutes.
