January Festivals
Festival of the Smoked Sausage: a slightly bizarre festival held in January when a sausage auctioned in honour of the patron saint of animals, is followed by a cultural fair and some good local cuisine.
February/March Festivals
Loule Carnival: this three-day celebration before Easter is one of Portugal’s biggest street parties with colourful costumes and floats and dancing carrying on deep into the night.
May Festivals
Algarve International Film Festival: taking place in the town of Portimao in May, this is the oldest film festival in Portugal having begun in 1972. The festival focuses on a number of main themes which change each year.
Algarve International Music Festival: this summer festival includes a range of music and dance performances, taking place throughout the region, with a good fringe element. Previous performers include Italian tenor, Luciano Pavarotti.
August/September Festivals
Medieval Fair: this spectacular medieval festival lights up the town of Castro Marim. Taking place at the 13th century castle throughout August and September, there are plenty of jesters, archers, music and food to keep people entertained.
September Festivals
National Folklore Festival: taking place across the Algarve region this event celebrates the local culture with a range of dancing, singing and other fun events over two weeks in September.
