One of the most famous delicacies in the region is caldeirada, a rich fish stew made with potatoes, peppers, a mixture of fish and parsley and generally served in a clay pot. You’ll find it on many menus and you should certainly try it at least once.
Other popular seafood dishes include cuttlefish, squid salad and steamed clams. You might want to sample cataplana, a dish made with pork, clams and garlic or on a particularly hot day, arjamolho is very popular. This is a cold refreshing soup and well worth sampling with presunto, thin smoked ham from the mountains.
You might be surprised to find some good Indian restaurants in the Algarve. In Albufeira, the Minar Indian restaurant is considered the best and has a nice outside seating area, while The Indian King Palace in Vilamoura is said to do tasty and freshly prepared north Indian delicacies.
With tourism such an important industry in the Algarve you won’t be surprised to find an excellent range of international cuisine options at all the major resort towns. Chinese, French, and Italian food is easy to find and you’ll have no problem finding some good old English pub grub or traditional breakfast if you’re really craving it.
