Albufeira-Algarve Travel Guide - Day Trips

Explore the Roman Algarve: this is a popular way to spend a day for many visitors. You can either join an organised tour or with your own vehicle, you can explore independently. There are picturesque Roman ruins dotted around the region and a good starting point is the archaeological museum in Faro with its impressive mosaic.
The castle in Tavira is well worth a visit and the highlight of the tour is Cerro da Vila which also has an excellent museum. It’s a good idea to set off early in the morning, before it gets too hot, and plan to be finished in time to find a nice restaurant for some great food.
To reach the beach head to the small fishing port of Olhao, where there are frequent ferries to the islands with a journey time of about 30 minutes. Although popular, you will usually find the beaches here relatively peaceful.
Sagres: if you’re interested in Portuguese naval history and the great discovering voyages that began in the 15th century, you should take a trip to Sagres, the southwest tip of mainland Europe. It was here in Sagres that the school of navigation was established by Prince Harry that was to pave the way for the great Portuguese explorations. It’s an attractive town and of course you will also find some superb beaches.
