Golf: the Algarve is a paradise for golfers and many people visit every year purely for the golf. There are a huge range of courses here, some more difficult than others, but all have beautiful scenery and are in immaculate condition.
The added advantage is that for most of the year you know you are guaranteed to get excellent golfing conditions. Note that because golf is so popular in the Algarve some courses require proof of your handicap and some have strict dress codes, so be sure to phone in advance to check the rules.
Water sport: aside from sailing, there are a good range of water sports for you to try your hand at any of the Algarve’s major beach resorts. Windsurfing is said to be good at a number of locations and for surfing, the west coast’s beaches tend to have bigger waves. There are also plenty of more fun and child friendly water sports available.
Spectator sport: there is an endless list of sporting options in the Algarve. Tennis is extremely popular here with a number of clubs offering tennis based holidays and courses for children and adults alike; it can be pretty hot playing in the midday sun however. There are also a number of horseback riding schools to be found and you can organise for a days riding into the heart of the Algarve countryside.
