Introduction to Viseu - City Centre
Viseu is both a city and a municipality in north-central Portugal. While having experienced significant economic and industrial development, the area has largely retained its charm. Among its alluring attributes are its renowned Teatro Viriato wine centre and Grao Vasco Museum. The settlement was founded in Roman times, when the town was known for its viso, or good view, of the area. A highlight is the Statue of Viriathus, the leader of the Lusitanians, who fought to free the area from the Romans. It was crafted by master Spanish sculptor Mariano Benlliure. Viseu City Centre hotels make wonderfully convenient places to be based while exploring the town's historical riches. Viseu's exceptional Romanesque/Gothic cathedral was created in the 800s AD, captured by the Moors in 930 AD, and taken by Ferdinand I of Leon in 1058.
