Introduction to Vila Real de Santo Antonio, Portugal
From its riverside position looking over into Spain, Vila Real de Santo Antonio offers one of the more unusual urban scenes in Portugal. After being completely engulfed by the sea in the 1600s, the Marques de Pombal rebuilt the entire city in just five months using a linear grid street system. At the heart of it all is the splendid Praca Marques de Pombal, the main square that is ringed by orange trees and lovely 18th century townhouses. The Manuel Cabanas Museum is here, showcasing the work of this important Portuguese artist, along with an interesting assortment of little cafes and shops. The river is the other hub of town life in Vila Real de Santo Antonio, so be sure to spend some time strolling its promenade along the Avenida da Republica. The Spanish town of Ayamonte is just across the river, tempting travellers with the lure of exploring another country.
