Traditional, religious and well off the beaten tourist circuit, the town of Vila Flor is hidden away in the beautiful northeast corner of Portugal. Its classic central square is anchored by the pretty Church of St Bartolomeu, looking like it stepped right out of the pages of medieval Europe. Around the square are most of the local shops and restaurants as well as some of the more interesting Vila Flor hotels. Some travellers come here to experience one of the many local religious festivals that happen on feast days. Vila Flor keeps these traditions alive and the processions are very authentic. The surrounding wealth of forests and national parks is another reason why people make their way to this part of the country. There are miles of hiking trails outside of town and some lovely drives for those with a car. Although the town itself isn’t much of a tourist destination, travellers looking for an unusual place to visit with a ‘real’ Portuguese atmosphere should consider finding their way to Vila Flor.
