Introduction to Setubal - City Centre
As industry declined in Setubal, Portugal, tourism came of age. A century ago this was a major fishing community. The nearby coastal Arrabida Natural Park presents pristine beaches and unspoilt natural attractions. A lovely dolphin colony can be glimpsed jumping around in the Sado River. The main cultural attraction here is the Portuguese late Gothic style Monastery of Jesus, which dates to the 1400s. Also notable is the Sao Juliao Church and its Manueline portals, as well as the 16th-century Castelo de Sao Filipe fortress on the Sado River, from where there is a terrific view of the city. The fort is now an upscale historic hotel, or pousada. Setubal City Centre hotels make great bases from which to explore the area and its wealth of natural and cultural attractions. It's fun to join the celebrations on the municipal holiday, 15 September, which marks the official recognition of the city in 1860.
