The ancient Castelo de Sao Filipe dominates a hill overlooking Portugal's seaside city of Setubal, 40kms south of the country's capital. It is one of the area's most popular attractions. Also known as Forte de Sao Filipe Setubal, Castelo de Sao Filipe consists of a watchtower, service buildings, a chapel and a castle, and is accessible via two ramps, a stone and masonry tunnel, and a wide staircase. Nearby Castelo de Sao Filipe hotels make the castle easy to explore. In addition, many offer spectacular views of the fort as well as the city and ocean below. Setubal can be easily visited from the castle as it is just a stone's throw away. The city has many lovely gardens and pedestrianised streets and its historic buildings are a great addition to Castelo de Sao Filipe.
