Known as the 'Green Island', Sao Miguel is the largest island of Portugal's Azores archipelago and an ideal destination to enjoy a relaxing island getaway. The town of Capelas can be found along the northern coast of the island, midway between the island's main cities of Ponte Delgado and Ribiera Grande. Its location makes it the perfect spot for not only enjoying its stunning beach, but for exploring the nearby historic cities. Capelas is great for swimming and the beach can get quite busy in the summer months, as can many of the Capelas hotels. This is especially true at the end of August, when the town celebrates the feast day of the parish's patron. At this time, the streets fill with kiosks and a procession accompanied by traditional bands passes through the town. The Capelas Lookout is one of the town's main draws and offers picturesque views of the sea and the waves crashing on the cliffs below.
