With the motto 'City of Work', it is not surprising that the city of Sao Joao da Madeira is an important industrial centre for the northwestern region of Portugal. The city is located within the Porto Metropolitan Area, some 20kms to the south of Portugal's second-largest metropolis. Sao Joao da Madeira hotels are found throughout the heart of the city, as the settlement welcomes a large number of visitors, both tourists and business travellers, each year. The N1 highway passes through the city and eventually links to the A1 auto-estrada about 10kms to the northwest. While in the city, visitors can find several things to do to pass the time. The City Hall is an old building that should be visited, and within the centre of the city is a large pedestrian zone which is home to plenty of shops, restaurants and cafes. Another wonderful site in the city is the Museum of Headgears, which is found in the old headgear plant.
