Introduction to Santarem, Portugal
The city of Santarem is a moderate sized settlement boasting a population of about 28,000 residents. It is located in the municipality and district of the same name, over 60kms to the northeast of Portugal's capital city of Lisbon. There are numerous Santarem hotels located within the city which accommodate the thousands of travellers to the settlement each year. The city rests upon the banks of the meandering Tagus River, and is home to a plethora of exciting attractions. One of the premier attractions here is the castle, which like most other castles around the Iberian Peninsula sits on top of a hill overlooking the area. The church of Saint John of Alporao is home to a magnificent archaeological museum, and the Fountain of the Figtree is a 14th century monumental fountain that bursts with extravagance.
