With its nine-kilometre stretch of stunning beach, it is no wonder why Porto Santo is a popular island destination. It is arguably the most visited island in Portugal's Madeira archipelago as a result of its gorgeous beach, which is complemented by the mountains that make up the rest of the island. The beach is, of course, the island's main draw and a fantastic place to laze around and enjoy the sun, sand and sea. Those wishing to get off of the beach for a few hours should visit Christopher Columbus' house as well as the 14th century Matriz Church, which is famous for displaying magnificent paintings of Martin Conrad and Max Romer. There is a fantastic 18-hole golf course on Porto Santo that hosted the Madeira Islands Open and includes a tennis court and equestrian centre on site. Most Porto Santo Beach hotels are luxurious five-star resorts, with cheaper accommodation found within the town.
