Introduction to Portimao - Ferragudo
Ferragudo brims with fine beaches, restaurants and bars, shops, activities and cultural attractions. Ferragudo hotels are comfy and a highlight in their own right. Compared to nearby Portimao, Ferragudo is both small and traditional. An estuary of the Rio Arade beautifies the region. Traditional fishermen's homes are sprinkled throughout the pretty village. Whitewashed houses cling to the hillside leading to the river. Palm-studded gardens abound as well. From the quay, there's a brilliant view of the Arade. The village square, Praca Rainha Dona Leonor, is great for watching people come and go from the sanctuary of a chic cafe. Nearby in the beach village of Praia da Angrinha, the stunning 15th-century Fort of Sao Joao de Arade awaits, where it once protected the mouth of the river. What's more, on the opposite bank near the Portimao marina is Santa Catarina Fort. Also in the area are the beaches of Praia da Angrinha and Praia Grande.
