Introduction to Portalegre, Portugal
Portalegre is a town in Portugal that is located very near to the border with Spain. This means it is located in the east of Portugal. It has a population of around twenty thousand permanent residents and many people commute across the border and live in Spain, despite working here in one of the hotels in Portalegre. Spanish and Portuguese are both widely spoken here and most staff in Portalegre hotels will be bilingual too. The famous poet Jose Regio lived here and his home and a museum dedicated to his life and work are prize tourist attractions here in Portalegre. His artworks are also on proud display. Portalegre hotels will happily guide you to either the Regio house or the related museum and both attractions are well worth the visit.
