Introduction to Portalegre - Elvas
Elvas, in eastern Portugal's Portalegre district, is known for its sturdy fortifications and massive aqueduct. This is one of Europe's most heavily protected frontier settlements. It lies 12kms from Spain. Its 17th-century fort features star-shaped fortifications, gates, curtain walls, bastions and moats. There's no better place to start your exploration of Elvas than its Old Town and its narrow, winding streets which snake in and out of Republica Square. Here you'll find the Manueline-style Church of Nossa Senhora da Assuncao, which was built in the 1500s. Nearby is the octagonal Church of Nossa Senhora da Consolacao, which although unremarkable from the exterior, it is graced inside by stunning marble columns and chic tiles from the 1600s on its interior walls. Also in the area is a small triangular plaza named Largo Santa Clara. The Municipal Museum, across town, is loaded with Roman mosaics, Christian paintings, Neolithic artefacts and more treasures. Elvas hotels are good to return to after a long day of sightseeing.other spellings: elvashotels, elwas otel, elves hotell, elvis hote, evas hotes, elvas hotle
