Introduction to Pico, Portugal
In the Portuguese Azores is one of the coolest islands in Europe that should be on every wine lover’s list of unique places to visit. Pico is called the Black Island for its abundance of black volcanic soil that has proven excellent for growing grapes. The historic vineyards here are so special that UNESCO has designated them as World Heritage sites. Although the entire island is obviously volcanic, it’s hard to miss the silhouette of Pico Volcano’s perfect cone rising from the flat fertile plains. When not cruising around the many vineyards on the island, an excursion up the flanks of the volcano provides a memorable outing. Each of the main towns of Madalena, Sao Roque and Lajes provides plenty of entertainment and amenities for travellers, including excellent restaurants, bars and Pico hotels. The little wine cafes in these coastal port towns are just the place to sample dozens of rare varieties of wine from the islands while enjoying a bounty of fresh seafood served up Portuguese style. other spellings: Picohotels, hotelPico, Picohotel
