Perhaps known best for its fantastic three-day summer rock festival every August, Paredes de Coura is a province and little town tucked away in the far northwest corner of Portugal. More than 30,000 people flock to the festival site each summer to listen to some of the world’s hottest bands. During the rest of the year, Paredes de Coura is decidedly calm and quiet. In the heart of the village is a classic European square flanked by the Baroque Church of the Holy Ghost, dating to the 18th century, and other lovely, historic buildings. This is where the most interesting cafes and shops can be found as well as the most charismatic Paredes de Coura hotels. The Coura River runs through the middle of town, providing a pleasant place to walk. But it may be useful to stop by the Tourist Office, just off the main square, to get some perspective on what to do. A couple of historic palaces are located just outside town such as Quinta de Julio de Castro.
