The small city of Oliveira de Azemeis sits in the municipality of the same name, in Portugal's north. This city of 15,000 is a popular stop for pilgrims en route to nearby La-Salette, the site of a sanctuary built in honour of an apparition of the Virgin Mary in the French town of the same name. For the non-religious, the most interesting aspect of a visit to the sanctuary may be witnessing the preserved finger of a burglar, which was shot off by a security guard. Santa Maria da Feira, home to the Visionarium science museum, sits 16kms to the northwest. For many visitors to this neighbouring city, its historical sites are the highlight of a visit.
