Introduction to Odemira, Portugal
Just a short drive inland from Portugal’s wonderful Alentejo Coast is the historic town of Odemira, the perfect place to stop while exploring this enchanting corner of the country. From the Roman era through the Moorish occupation and on to the kings of Portugal, Odemira’s location on the banks of the Mira River has made it a favoured spot for settlement for centuries. Portuguese towns don’t get much more charming than this, with its whitewashed windmills overlooking the valley and classic town square. The churches of Santa Maria and Salvador are the main historic attractions here, but most visitors come just to soak in the tranquil atmosphere and country scenery that fills Odemira. Well known for its potters, the town boasts several pottery workshops where visitors can watch locals at work and buy handmade items. The windmills, preserving the traditional methods of milling corn and grains, are open to the public.
