Mortagua is one of 24 inland municipalities in central Portugal's Viseu district. This community of more than 10,000 is, for the most part, off the tourist radar, making it a great alternative to the country's busy beach resorts to the west, especially for those looking for an authentic taste of Portuguese culture. The country's expansive coast lies roughly 80kms to the west, but there are plenty of culturally-interesting inland towns close by to discover. The larger municipality of Santa Comba Dao is just 10kms to the east. Here, well-preserved Baroque buildings such as the Igreja Matriz church can be viewed in the city's old quarter, where winding alleyways and pretty squares with pavement cafes are the order of the day. The River Dao, a great spot for canoeing, passes through this region. Other outdoor activities, like cycling, walking, horseback riding and golfing, can be enjoyed from Mortagua hotels.
