The small but fascinating town of Miranda do Douro is located within the Braganca district of northeastern Portugal, about a kilometre from the Portuguese-Spanish border. The town is found on the N218, on the western banks of the Douro River, which separates the two Iberian countries. Many of the tourists that enter the town are therefore Spanish or Portuguese, but there are still a large number of international and intercontinental tourists that travel here each year. The cathedral that stands in the Douro Valley, just a short distance from the town centre, is a remarkable medieval structure that must be visited. Close to the cathedral is the Museum of the Lands of Miranda, another wonderful attraction for tourists. The river is also a popular attraction in the town, with many bird and wildlife tours available.
