Introduction to Matosinhos, Portugal
Located on the River Leca's north bank, in the Portuguese city of Oporto's northern suburbs, is Matosinhos. The town is most famous for its huge port and high-quality seafood and fish restaurants. Leixoes Port was originally constructed in 1884 and greatly enlarged in 1932. A number of Matosinhos hotels are located in the port area along the main A28 coastal highway which heads south to Oporto and north towards Spain. Located on a hill just past the port is the Church of Born Jesus, which was erected in the 18th century and has a wooden statue of Jesus on the cross which was washed onto the beach during the 10th century and is missing an arm. The church features a Baroque facade as well as a paneled ceiling which portrays scenes from the Passion. The Matosinhos promenade stretches the full length of the beach and is popular among roller-bladders and cyclists. The extensive beach boasts large waves, making it a hotspot for water sports such as surfing and kite-surfing. The beachfront is also home to many of the finest restaurants in town.
