Introduction to Madeira - Machico
The Portuguese town and municipality of Machico is conveniently close to the international airport in Santa Cruz on fantastic Madeira Island. The area is in the easternmost section of the island. A plaque notes the place where the pioneering Portuguese explorer Francisco Alcoforado landed and proclaimed that he saw a land dense with forests alongside a grand bay. Tourists feel the magic of the area by basing themselves in Machico hotels. The town is set in a scenic valley and is accessible by several major roads. Steeped and inclined hillsides pepper the area. Temperatures are generally pleasant and moderate all year round.
