Introduction to Madeira - Calheta
Magically ensconced along the southwest coast of Madeira in Portugal is Calheta, a laid-back municipality. Calehta, which means small bay, was founded in 1430. A major sand-substitution project has replaced Caletha's indigenous dark, rock/sand beach with soft white sand to lure in more tourists. A magnificent panorama of the Arch of Calheta can be enjoyed from Pinheiro da Fora, along Madeira's southwestern coast. Not yet overrun by tourism, the area remains largely an agriculture and fishing hub. There are a few small-scale commercial establishments, too. Hip and trendy Calheta hotels are found around the area, with some of them boasting nearness to the Atlantic Ocean. Well-placed suburban residential homes on a main plaza have great views of the ocean as well. A decent road links Calheta with Ponta do Sol, while local roads connect the interior of the parish, leading to Paul da Serra, which is 1,300 metres above sea level.Visit our Madeira Travel Guide
