Introduction to Lisbon - Lapa - Alcantara
The small freguesia (parish) of Lapa nestles into the Portuguese capital of Lisbon. The cardinal patriarch of Lisbon Francisco de Saldanha da Gama created it on 11 February 1770. Many embassies and consulates make their homes in this quiet, leafy section of the city. The area also holds the Assembly of the Republic site as well as the home of the prime minister of Portugal. This is one of Lisbon's most attractive residential areas. Lapa hotels mingle with embassies and fine residences on tree-lined lanes. While deliciously secluded, the area is just a short taxi ride from the city centre. Much more than a place to stay is the Lapa Palace in Lisbon, which is an attraction in its own right for its stunning architecture. Another notable residence is Casa Visconde de Sacavern on Rua do Sacramento a Lapa, which was built in the late 1800s. It is enjoyable to walk past the area's mighty villas cloaked in greenery.Visit our Lisbon Travel Guide
