Introduction to Lisbon - Castelo - Alfama
Lisbon's Castelo area is one of the oldest parts of the city and dates back to the 11th century. It is here where the hilltop Moorish castle of Castelo de Sao Jorge can be found, which is one of Lisbon's main historic sites. Attractions which can be found on the castle grounds include a statue of Portugal's first king, Afonso Henriques, the Torre de Sao Lourenco and beautiful surrounding gardens. The esplanade just outside of the castle walls is lined with fabulous eateries and Castelo hotels, and is a great place for witnessing views of the city below. Castelo is connected to the rest of the city by tram and can be reached by walking through the old neighbourhood of Alfama.
