Situated in the western area of central Lisbon on the banks of the River Tagus, Belem is one of the most picturesque districts of the Portuguese capital, featuring a number of major tourist attractions.
Belem Tower, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the undoubted highlight here.
Nearly 500 years old, it originally sat right in the middle of the area before the water was redirected after the catastrophic Lisbon earthquake in the mid 18th century.
Wonderfully ornate, the tower was formerly a major military installation, complete with watchtowers and cannon positions.
The nearby Jeronimos Monastery, also UNESCO listed, is another major Lisbon attraction in Belem with its long, detailed facade and domed tower, both of which date back to a similar period as the Belem Tower.
It's a sprawling complex of chambers, archways and courtyards that are well worth at least half a day of exploration.
Belem hotels are dotted along the riverfront and, despite the excellent location ,there are some bargains to be had here.
