Introduction to Lisbon - Bairro Alto - Chiado
Home to Lisbon's shopping and nightlife centre, Chiado is one of the city's liveliest areas and a great place to stay to get a feel for Portuguese culture. It has been a meeting place for artists and aristocrats since the 19th century, and houses the Ancient Art Museum, which is one of Lisbon's most visited attractions. The Chiado Museum can also be found here and occupies the famous Sao Roque Church. The historical Carmo Convent and Church is a must-visit for all, as its magnificent ruins are all that are left of the building after the earthquake that hit Lisbon in 1755. Stylish bars, fashionable boutiques and trendy cafes line the streets of Chiado, and there is a great selection of Chiado hotels to be found. The district's convenient location along the metro's Blue and Green lines makes it a great place to stay, even for those planning to visit other areas of the city.
