Introduction to Lagos - Luz
Some of the most beautiful and expansive beaches in the Algarve are set within and adjacent to the small village of Praia da Luz, which also known as Luz de Lagos due to its proximity to the city of Lagos, three miles east. Here, a small fishing community remains but in the 1980s, the community made way for a growing number of Luz hotels, restaurants, shops, cafes, bars and villas as the tourism industry began to flourish. The community's origins date all the way back to the Roman Empire, and a fascinating set of ruins of ancient Roman baths is the second most popular attraction here, with the first being the pristine blue flag beach set among sparsely vegetated cliffs, clean blue-green Atlantic waters and the local icon known simply as Black Rock.
