Introduction to Idanha-a-Nova, Portugal
Once a hangout for the Knights Templar centuries ago, the tiny agricultural town of Idanha-a-Nova, in the northeast of Portugal, is now a quirky travel destination for castle buffs and history junkies. The vast Plain of Idanha has a long and storied history in the conquests of this corner of Europe. At the heart of Idanha-a-Nova is the Torre dos Templarios, a fortress built by one of the leading Templars in 1187. It’s a ruin now, but its location along the banks of the Ponsul River generates loads of mystery and romance. There are also some lovely 18th century noble manor houses and palaces in town that are worth checking out, such as the Palacete das Palmeira, just next to the Town Hall. A great time to visit Idanha-a-Nova is around Easter, when it holds its annual three-day festival. There’s a wonderful atmosphere to this town, perhaps because it is off the beaten tourist circuit. Travellers will find the right amount of cafes, shops and Idanha-a-Nova hotels in the town centre to support an enjoyable stopover.other spellings: Idanha-a-Novahotels, hotelIdanha-a-Nova, Idanha-a-Novahotel
