Introduction to Guimaraes - City Centre
Portugal's Guimaraes, in the northwest corner of the country, is an average-size city with oversized culture. An array of monuments, museums, art galleries, cultural associations and popular festivals keep visitors and locals alike happy. The most eagerly anticipated annual fairs are the Cortejo do Linho (Linen Parade), the Batalha das Flores (Battle of the Flowers), the Marcha Gualteriana (Gualteriana March), the Festas Gualterianas (Gualterianas Festival) and the Festas Gualterianas (Gualterianas Festival), which has been held in August in honour of Saint Gualter since 1906. Since it opened in 2005, the Vila Flor Cultural Centre has been a major cultural venue for expositions and concerts. The New York Times named Guimaraes as one of the 41 places to go in 2011 and labeled the town one of the Iberian Peninsula's new hotspots for culture. The town's splendid Toural Square church enjoys UNESCO World Heritage status.
